Information about Spring League

Sherwood Park Youth Flag Football is offering recreational and competitive NFL Flag for kids aged 4-17 years old. We are excited to offer recreational and competitive programming for the 2027 season!  Read more about all of our programs below.

RECREATION DIVISION
(ALL AGES) 

Have fun and have a blast while playing like the pros! This division is geared towards all athletes - whether you are new to the game or looking to master your already established skills - this is the place for you.  While the official schedule has not been released, the first game will be held on May 1, 2027. The recreation division will be comprised of 8 games - 1 game per week that will be held on Saturday mornings on the grass fields in Emerald Hills with a Jamboree to wrap up the season. Coaches will be instructed to reach out to the families on the team to get feedback on the best night for each family but the decision will ultimately be up to the coach as to where/when practice will be held. The league recommends no more than 2 practices per week leading up to the first game of the season and 1 practice per week during the season.  When you register, you will be asked to select which school your child goes to. This is how the teams are determined. SPYFFL will try to group neighborhood kids together so that you may have a friend or two on your team and your practice area will be close to where you live. SPYFFL will not accomodate requests to switch teams. 

competitve division 
(12/13 & 14/15 & 16/17 ages only)

This spring we are bringing back an exciting element to our league to allow our players an opportunity to play at a higher level and have the skill to bring that competitive edge. Players and coaches create their own teams rather than being put on a team in rec division. Teams can practice as many times as they would like each week and the individual touchdown rules do not apply in this division. These teams will compete for an opportunity to become SPYFFL champions and to represent Alberta at Club Nationals (date and location TBD). Games will be played Friday nights in Sherwood Park. 8 game season with an additional “Championship Day”. Official playoff/championship schedule TBD. Please note **players and coaches MUST create their OWN teams**

Touchdown for tots
(4&5 division)

This Spring, SPYFFL is adding a new division for our tiniest teams!  This division is for your kids TURNING 4 or TURNING 5 by December 31, 2026. Birth years in 2021 and 2022 will be accepted. 
The focus of this division will be to progressively teach our tots the fundamental movement skills required to play football while having a blast doing so! These kids will get the same equipment kits as the rest of the league and have their own area next to the fields where thre "big kids" play so that they too can #playlikethepros. There will be no official games in this division and therefore no weekly practices - this division will gather once per week on the Emerald Hills grass fields with the rest of their team and coach to facilitate their on-field experience. Our tots learn play with their own "mini football" and will go through a series of drills and games to enhance their learning experience. 

Weather cancellation policy - if games need to be cancelled due to the county closing fields or weather deemed too unsafe to play, games will be rescheduled after the following weeks games after the regularly scheduled games have played (field availability permitting).

We believe every girl deserves the opportunity to step onto the field, compete, lead, and discover just how capable she is.
This past spring, SPYFFL proudly introduced our first-ever All Girls Division, and the response was everything we hoped it would be — and more. We saw girls come together, build friendships, develop their skills, support one another, and gain confidence in an environment where they could truly thrive.
And we want to see that growth continue.
There is something incredibly powerful about girls playing alongside other girls. It's an opportunity to develop confidence, find their voice, take risks, make mistakes, celebrate successes, and see themselves as athletes. It's about creating a space where girls feel empowered to compete, lead, and take up space on the field.
For generations, football was viewed as a sport for boys. Girls weren't always encouraged to play, and opportunities for female athletes were limited. We're proud to be part of changing that narrative.
And the future of this sport is incredibly exciting. The future is female.
In 2026, Canada's Senior Women's National Flag Football Team captured GOLD at the IFAF World Flag Football Championships in Düsseldorf, Germany, defeating the United States to become world champions and securing Canada's qualification for the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, where flag football will make its Olympic debut.
That's the future we're building toward. And it starts right here, with girls picking up a football, pulling on their flags, and discovering what they're capable of.
Our goal is to grow this division, create more opportunities for girls, and build a community where female athletes can flourish.
Because confidence is built through opportunity. And sometimes, all a girl needs is the chance to see what she can do.

Jersey/Short Size Chart

Parents/Guardians PLEASE familiarize yourself with the size charts and choose the appropriate size for each particpant correctly. We have extremely limited stock for jersey or short exchanges. See size charts below - we cannot exchange jerseys after they have been purchased and distributed. We reccommend that you size up if you unsure about the fit - feedback is the new style of jerseys fit smaller than in previous years.

Equipment Kits

Each participant will receive an equipment kit prior to the start of the season that is included in registration. This kit is comprised of:
  • NFL jersey
  • Shorts
  • Mouthguard
  • Flag belt 
  • Practice t-shirt

In addition to the equipment kit, registration fees include team/individual pictures, accident and liability insurance, Football Alberta membership, season gift, certified referees, and field fees.
